New mural on the Bloor underpass west of Lansdowne

[Update June 22, 2008: The BIG festival was a success.]

Richard Mongiat is painting a mural on the south wall of the Bloor underpass that is located just west of Lansdowne. The official unveiling will take place this Saturday June 21 at the Big on Bloor festival. At the last Dig In meeting, Richard explained that he was painting the mural in a way that doesn't cover up the concrete. I like that approach. When I first heard he was painting a mural, I thought to myself "Wait a second, those concrete walls are already beautiful" so I was pleased to hear that the mural doesn't try to hide the surface it's painted on. If I understood Richard correctly, he's trying to work with the surface rather than against it. In other words, the concrete surface that's already there will be part of the mural. Richard hasn't finished his work but I like what I see so far. Dig In member Ramanan Sivaranjan has been taking some nice detail shots of the mural. You can see them here.
