Taxi driver accused of leaving scene after seriously injuring cyclist at Dovercourt and Argyle denied bail

I was at Old City Hall today for the bail hearing of Sultan Ahmed, the 38-year-old taxi driver accused of seriously injuring a cyclist at Dovercourt and Argyle on November 14. The hearing is covered by a publication ban, which means I can't post any of the evidence I heard. The hearing took most of the day. Ahmed's wife, children and a group of supporters were in the courtroom. After listening to all the evidence and arguments, Justice of the Peace Cesar De Morais decided the Crown had shown why Ahmed should stay in jail until his case is resolved. Ahmed will appear again in court on December 1. His next appearance will be by video. He will be in what is called set-date court, which means his appearance will deal with procedural issues and will likely be very short.
